In 1891, Henry H. Elbers entered the field of horticulture in Buffalo and five years later was appointed superintendent of the old Parade Grounds (now Martin Luther King Park). After 18 years of developing a renowned public green space, Mr. Elbers was appointed director of the Buffalo Botanical Gardens. With 27 years of experience under his belt, Mr. Elbers opened Elbers Landscape Service, and in 1918 and moved the business to its current location on Main Street in North Buffalo in 1920.

Elbers Landscape Service was operated by members of the Elbers family until 1980, when the James and Elizabeth Hornung purchased it. James E Hornung, Sr. had been a member of the Elbers staff since 1972.

In 1988, Mr. Hornung took on additional duties with the City of Buffalo as the Head Groundskeeper at Pilot Field (now Dunn Tire Park) the home of the Buffalo Bisons. After 15 years at the ball park, Mr. Hornung shifted his focus to the City of Buffalo Parks system and Olmsted Parks Conservancy. In 2004 Mr. Hornung moved to the Erie County Parks Department and also served as the President of the Erie County Cornell Co-Operative extension. In 2008 Mr. Hornung was appointed Erie County Commissioner of Parks Recreation and Forestry overseeing all County, City and Olmsted parks in the system.

Since 2003 day to day management and operation of the company have been overseen by Mr. Hornungs' son Jim, Jr. and wife Elizabeth. As Elbers has grown and expanded into other markets throughout New York State the Hornung family has remained committed to the Western New York community with the help of their dedicated staff.
